Fireplace and wood burner specialists in Wellington, Somerset.

We enlarge this fireplace back to the original opening size. Because it is a 1930s bungalow, it has a class one chimney.

A Class one chimney is common in houses built up until the 1960s. These chimneys consist of a brick-built stack, situated on either an external or internal wall. Furthermore, they will often contain multiple flues for multiple fires (although the fires cannot share a flue). A class one type of chimney can be used with all types of solid fuel fires and stoves. Also, gas fires may use them too. They will need lining only if they fail a smoke test. However, every Hetas installer that we know will always use a flue liner. Reasons to use a flue liner can be found here.

Fireplace enlargement in Ford Street, Wellington, Somerset.

We arrive early and remove the nasty, dated stone fireplace surround. It is just as we hoped and expected. The original opening of 800 x 900 is still there. We knockout and remove the bricks and debris and find the original fireplace chamber size.

After sweeping the chimney we remove the hearth and seal all areas. First of all, we cut the new slate hearth so that it fits perfectly. We then seal the slate and lay it on a sand and cement bed.

The register plate and steels are now in place. All ready for the brick slips and render. Our customers choose “Old Bayswater” bricks from brick slips dot co dot uk. These bricks are very popular and have a real old world charm. Also because they are a 20 mm slice of real brick, they don’t reduce the fireplace size too much.

We then install the flue liner and connect to a 5KW Mendip Woodland Stove. This is such a popular wood burner and rightly so. However, at 110 Kilograms it is a two man job to fit it. We use a five inch flue liner with a lifetime warranty. This stove is Defra and ecodesign compliant.

We have problems accessing the chimney due to its height. The bungalow has solar panels on every aspect of the roof. this makes access with a roof ladder impossible. We have to hire a cherry picker to install the flue liner and chimney cowl.

This fireplace now looks great!
